Safe Handling and Mobility(SHM)/PACE Training for Nova Scotia’s Long Term Care, Home Care, and Disability Support Program sectors
AWARE-NS, the Health and Community Services Safety Association, in partnership with WCB Nova Scotia are working with individual organizations in developing and implementing an effective Safe Handling and Mobility (SHM) program.
The SHM program begins with Setting the Stage; building awareness and senior leadership commitment through active engagement. Program Review is then conducted to identify gaps and opportunities. Equipment Inventory is conducted, and an Action Plan is developed to close the gaps on the program and equipment. The SHM Team is formed and roles and responsibilities are identified (SHM Champion, peer leaders, PACE Team & trainers) and an education/training roll-out plan is prepared for staff.
PACE is a key element to a SHM program. It is the pre-mobility status check/risk assessment that is done before any task is completed. Four-hour SHM/PACE training workshops are conducted by trained peer leaders (Train the Trainer model). These peer leaders train front-line staff and managers to identify hazards and assess risks prior to the delivery of care. Front-line staff are also trained to embed SHM principles into everyday practices. Program Evaluations audit the SHM program implementation; identify areas for improvement; document and report.
Together, the Departments of Health and Wellness, Labor and Advanced Education and Community Services, along with WCB Nova Scotia are providing targeted funding in 2018-19 that will support employers to release staff to attend the four-hour PACE training workshops.
